Corporate Faliure Maxwell Communications Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words
Corporate Faliure Maxwell Communications - Essay Example In Britain rates of insolvency have risen to historic highs, punctuated quite dramatically by company failures from Rolls Royce through the Olympia and York failure (the developers of London's Docklands), and the collapse of the Maxwell communications empire. Because struggling debtor corporations frequently raid their pension funds for cash, which consequently are under-funded when companies declare bankruptcy, significant private costs have been off-loaded onto the government. Furthermore, failing firms do not pay their taxes, and so the tax authorities frequently join the list of unpaid creditors (Altman2003). Yet bankruptcy is not without its beneficiaries. Just as a deadly epidemic is lucrative for undertakers and morticians, the vast sums of money involved in the largest corporate bankruptcies have exerted a magnetic effect on the most sophisticated--and expensive--corporate lawyers and accountants. ... accounting, in both the United States and Britain, have become prestigious revenue-centers for law and accounting firms, so much so that in the United States there is increasing pressure to pare down the size of professional fees. During the 1980s, several of the largest accounting firms in Britain merged with small boutique insolvency firms, such as Cork Gully's assimilation by Coopers and Lybrand, just as numbers of large United States law firms absorbed smaller bankruptcy specialist firms simply in order to acquire their expertise in a quickly growing area (Altman2003). the case of Maxwell shows that despite the far-reaching practical implications of such legal change, bankruptcy law opens up an almost virgin field of inquiry for sociolegal scholars and sociologists. Given the enormous impact bankruptcy reforms are alleged to have, little research has appraised what or who shaped the bankruptcy laws in either country. Empirical studies document the aftermath and apparent consequentiality of the reforms. Bankruptcy law provides an especially valuable site to account for the distribution of power among corporations for two reasons. On the one hand, at the moment of bankruptcy, every credit relationship, which is to say every financial relationship with other companies, banks, the state, consumers, suppliers, workers, and even communities, is simultaneously thrown into doubt. In principle, every player in the organizational network is at the bankruptcy table. All their interests are manifest, as each vies for a piece of a pie that will be too small to satisfy them all. On the other hand, who wins is directly contingent upon statutory priority or on the strength of their security--the legal instruments creditors have used to protect their interests. This conjunction

Entrepreneurship Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Entrepreneurship - Essay Example A Retail clothing store is also chosen because of the relative ease with which it can be started. Usually clothing retailers do not manufacture their own garments and outsource all their manufacturing to third parties. This is done to keep the focus on the main business activity that is selling garments. In this paper a discussion will be made on how to start a clothing retail business in United Kingdom. A brief outline will be given regarding the idea of the business in the paper. Business developed alongside with costs and market research will also be included in the paper. Major operational issues will also be discussed alongside with the target market and consumer in the paper. Outline of the business Idea The idea behind the business is to open a discounted clothing retail store. The store will offer garments at very affordable rates to the consumers. The aim is to cater to the needs of the consumers in the most affordable form. Low priced clothing will be the unique selling pro position of the business. The notion of selling clothing at lower price is justified because there are many people who would prefer buying clothes at affordable rates. Not many people can afford high prices, even for fashionable clothes, and therefore this store might be able to attract a large number of people. Profit margins will have to be slashed but large amount of sales is likely to compensate for lower profit margins. Another important part of the business strategy will be outsourcing of manufacturing to countries like China and India. These countries are well known for their textile products and can produce garments at very low rates, and European Union countries are already buying textile products from these countries (European Commission, 2012). The business will be outsourcing its manufacturing in order to make sure that enough attention is given to things that are important like marketing and sales. Also expertise of producing clothes at affordable rates is not available in the country and therefore taking help from specialized the developing countries might be the only possible option. The strategy of outsourcing also complements the overall business strategy of the company as it will allow us to order large quantities which will be necessary for large number of sales. The idea behind the business is to attract people who look for clothing at lower prices. The retail clothing store will also focus on quality and this will also attract consumers. After the economic crisis of 2008 people have seen their purchasing power reduced. This is why people will be interested in such economic times in affordable clothing line. Lower prices will be the main focus of the business and this will also be used in the marketing of the business in the country. Market and Consumers The main target market for the business will be the younger generation. Young people usually are short of money; therefore, they look for good bargains when it comes to clothing. They look for new and trendy garments which are affordable, and this is exactly what will we provide them. African American and Conflicting Perspective Essay Example for Free
African American and Conflicting Perspective Essay Every individual has a perspective on things in life and their personal idea of the truth. These are universal concepts and are widely seen in ted Hughes poems ââ¬Å"birthday Lettersâ⬠. Birthday letters is a set of poems, said to have been written by Hughes for six years prior to his death, on his ex wifeââ¬â¢s birthday each year this the selection of poems being called birthday letters. The selection on poems surrounds his problematic marital issues between himself and his wife Sylvia Plath. It is also to show the conflicting perspective on their relationship. This is mainly towards the criticism he received all those years after her suicide. He had been blamed for being the catalyst for her suicide/death and so began a collection of poems regarding their relationship but in some way, excusing himself and explaining that she was already on a destructive path. Through two of his poems, Fulbright scholars and the shot, an understanding of the poems have thrown lighten the concepts of conflicting perspectives. Two other complementary texts such as letters from two jima and to kill a mockingbird convey conflicting perspectives however on issues such as racial discrimination and the perspectives of an opposing country that has been marked as enemies. Fulbright scholars are the first poem in the birthday letters collection. Hughes here tries to remember how he met her and first know of her existence. He does this whilst looking at a picture that was taken at university, when he was a naive young man. He ponders about her throughout the poem trying hard to delve into his psyche hopelessly to recollect something about her when they met at a party. This can be noted by the quote ââ¬Å"were you among them? â⬠which refers to the picture of Fulbright scholar. In terms of conflicting perspectives, the e poem can also be seen as a text that he wrote implicating how difficult it is t recall that first meeting, however he begins to explain his perspective of Sylvia Plath. He says ââ¬Å"your exaggerated American grin for the camerasâ⬠which referred to her as someone with false appearances. The various techniques Hughes used to convey his ideas were the use of rhetorical questions such as ââ¬Å"were you among them? â⬠, the repetitions of the word maybe and the use of the I persona, and metaphors such as the ââ¬Å"first fresh peachâ⬠. Rhetorical questions he used as a means of asking himself how he met her and what she first looked like to him. The metaphor ââ¬Ëdelicious peachâ⬠can be said to be another way to say she was the first girl he ââ¬Å"ever tastedâ⬠, in terms of the experience of truly liking someone who seemed special to him. Reputation is used throughout the poem of maybe can be analyzed as a way of trying to remember what he saw of her and his knowing of her existence. The I persona is an important tool in terms of Hughes alluding to the very personal nature of his reflection. The poem ââ¬Ëthe shotââ¬â¢ is also one from the collection and conveys Plath as someone different to what her fans saw her to be. As he says that she was deceitful in terms of appearance of a good and decent person/poet. In the poem, the shot is a metaphor of Plath being bullet shout out a gun. It can also e sad that Hughes thinks that he was the one shot. Hughes perspective on paths ââ¬Å"destructive pathâ⬠is one that she has always been on, saying that she was already a bullet long before she has met him. Followers of Plath as a victim view him as a catalyst for her suicide but in the poem he tries to explain that she was already suicidal as she tried to commit suicide when she was younger. The use of word ââ¬Å"daddyâ⬠is one of great importance as it refers to her childish attachment to her father. This is also the title of her famous poem daddy. Hughes also explains that from his perspective, that he himself has become the father figure that she had ways been looking for. Overall, the concept of the two poems depict conflicting perspectives through analysis of ted Hughesââ¬â¢ birthday letters. The text letters from Iwo jima is similarly to birthday letters, a conflicting perspective however of the Japanese however of the Japanese soldiers during the American invasion of to two jima in ww2. It depicts their perspective throughout the turbulent time, showing that even were still human beings with the same universal feelings. Clint eastwood directed the film letters from Iwo Jima in 2006, trying to show an American or non Japanese audience their side of the story or their perspective. Here, a conflicting perspective is shown. Throughout the film, eastwood wants us to empathise with the Japanese perspective f the same terror and emotions that the Americans felt at that time too. The main character is a young Japanese soldier called saigo who is little enthused on fighting and going to war. This is all seen through techniques eastwood input such as flashbacks- which were important in the film. The audience is then able to see how the soldiers were like before the war and what it was like for them when they got conscripted. Their reflections are a huge part in their conflicting perspective and also a great important technique is the Japanese language. Eastwood used the language to give a strong sense of ethnicity and strong sense of tradition. To kill a mocking bird written by Harper lee in 1960 conveys the conflicting perspectives of the treatment of African Americans in Alabama. This conflicting perspective is seen through the eyes of a young white girl, rather than n African American person. The text shows her view o the racial discrimination against the Negroes and the treatment, prejudice and violence they receive. The event takes place thatââ¬â¢s how a conflicting perspective is the court case scene, where an African American man is accused of raping a young white girl. The perspective here is not only through the girl, Scout Finch, but also her father Atticus finch which is the lawyer defending the accused. However he took on a case he know that with all the racial discrimination and prejudice around, he would inevitable lose. The fact that he took on the case shows a conflicting perspective of a white American man who has no prejudice against African Americans. The daughter scout finch views the situation on a different level as well as she was basically raised by African American woman and didnââ¬â¢t judge her, as many people did in Maycomb County. She begins to see and understand the prejudice and discrimination when the man is accused of rape as the majority people did not like his race at that time. It was seen as stereotypical to blame him for the rape. The conflicting perspective here is that the perspective o a young white American and her family on the treatment the Negroes received. It can be said that harper lee wanted the audience to challenge their beliefs and see events from the perspective of a young child who is horrified by the treatment of the Negroes.

Why AFI is the best band :: Music Performing Artists Persuasive Essays
"A Fire Inside, to me, means these three other guys who drink all the soymilk backstage before I get a damn drop of it." Jade Puget, the guitarist for AFI, jokes. AFI is the greatest band. Of course, the music is also great. Those factors are topped, though, by the hardcore dedication of their fans. AFI is composed of Davey Havok ? vocals, Jade Puget ? guitar, Adam Carson ? drums, and Hunter Burgan playing bass. Davey and Jade are both very funny and often make stupid statements and inside jokes that only a true fan would understand. ?Davey doesn?t watch the damn road when he?s driving.? Jade commented once. ?I?m sure if we crashed he would be fine and I would end up embedded in a tree. If her ever kills me with his driving, though, I?m gonna come back as a squirrel and run up his pant leg.? The band often references homosexuality in their quotes, but none of them are gay. The band gets along well, and gets along with their fans. AFI has released seven full-length albums, along with a number of EPs. Their music changes with every CD, sometimes drastically. The shift from their 2000 album ?The Art of Drowning? to their 2003 ?Sing the Sorrow? took the band in a completely different musical direction. Their style changed from old-school punk to more of a horrorpunk ? electrogoth sound. No matter what they decide to do with their music, though, they are extremely talented musicians and have never produced a bad album. What keeps AFI going the most, however, is the loyalty of its fans. The league of the followers that they have established is known as The Despair Faction. In the song ?Miss Murder?, The Despair Faction provides backing vocals. Hundreds of fans were invited to chant the ?hey? in the background of the chorus. AFI loves its fans, and even let some of them have a segment in their ?I Heard A Voice? DVD. They get to actively participate in the band?s music. Being an AFI fan is the greatest thing in the world.

The Bengal Region
Bengal is a region in the northeastern Indian Subcontinent, defined by the river delta of the Ganges and Brahmaputra Rivers. This rich agricultural land has long supported one of the densest human populations on Earth, despite the danger from floods and cyclones. Today, Bengal is divided between the nation of Bangladesh and the state of West Bengal, India. In the larger context of Asian history, Bengal played a key role in ancient trade routes as well as during the Mongol invasion, British-Russian conflicts, and the spread of Islam to Eastern Asia. Even the distinct language, called Bengali or Bangla ââ¬â which is an eastern Indo-European language and a linguistic cousin of Sanskrit ââ¬â spread throughout much of the Middle East, with about 205 million native speakers. Early History The derivation of the word Bengal orà Banglaà is unclear, but it appears to be quite ancient. The most convincing theory is that it comes from the name of the Bangà tribe, Dravidic-speakers who settled the river delta sometime around 1000 B.C. As part of the Magadha region, the early Bengal population shared a passion for arts, sciences, and literature and are credited with the invention of chess as well as the theory that the Earth orbits the Sun. During this time, the main religious influence came from Hinduism and ultimately shaped early politics through the fall of the Magadha era, around 322 B.C. Until the Islamic conquest of 1204 ââ¬â which placed Bengal under control of the Delhi Sultanate ââ¬â Hindu remained the regions main religion and through trade with Arab Muslims introduced Islam far earlier to their culture, this new Islamic controlled to the spread of Sufism in Bengal, a practice of mystic Islam which still dominates the regions culture to this day. Independence and Colonialism By 1352, though, the city-states in the region managed to unify again as one nation, Bengal, under its ruler Ilyas Shah. Alongside the Mughalà Empire, the newly founded Bengal Empire served as the subcontinents strongest economic, cultural and trade powers ââ¬â its sea ports meccas of commerce and exchanges of traditions, art, and literature. In the 16th century, European traders began to arrive at Bengals port cities, bringing with them western religion and customs as well as new goods and services. However, by 1800 the British East India Company controlled the most military power in the region and Bengal fell back to colonial control. Around 1757 to 1765, the central government and military leadership in the region fell to BEIC control. Constant rebellion and political unrest shaped the course of the next 200 years, but Bengal remained ââ¬â for the most part ââ¬â under foreign rule until India gained independence in 1947, taking with it West Bengal ââ¬â which was formed along religious lines and left Bangladesh its own country as well. Current Culture and Economy The modern-day geographic region of Bengal ââ¬â which encompasses West Bengal in India and Bangladesh ââ¬âà is primarily an agricultural region, producing such staples as rice, legumes, and high-quality tea. It also exports jute. In Bangladesh, manufacturing is becoming increasingly important to the economy, particularly the garment industry, as are remittances sent home by overseas workers. The Bengali people are divided by religion. Around 70 percent are Muslim due to Islam first being introduced in the 12th century byà Sufià mystics, who took control of much of the region, at least in terms of shaping government policy and national religion; the remaining 30 percent of the population is mostlyà Hindu.

Essay on ââ¬ÅDriving competitive forces in the movie industryââ¬Â
Essay on ââ¬Å"Driving competitive forces in the movie industryâ⬠In the movie rental industry the five forces include limited options where there are a limited number of options that are available this mainly consist of Red box, Netflix, Blockbuster and small video stores. Most of the times renters are forced to choose among the above mentioned this is because there is a large number of buyers. This is favourable since it assists these companiesââ¬â¢ to be in charge of market share over renting of videos. Convenience is also another factor the buyers are always going for more convenient and easier methods of doing things, because movie rental industries tend to be moving in the same way this ensures that at least everyone has a choice. Netflix and the other industries make most movies online this is favourable because inventories are not required and the issue of running out of movie copies is also avoided. (Solutions, 2009, p.56) Economy is also a factor nowadays people enjoy watching movies but going to the theater to watch movies is expensive. The availability of the movie on rental basis is cheap and easy way to view a movie. It is cheap because renting prices are affordable it makes renting favourable. It is only unfavorable when one waits for three to eight months for the movie to be obtainable on DVD. A four factor is change in lifestyle as people get older they tend to change their lifestyle and this involves staying at home at most times which encourages people to watch movies. Rental movies hence become favourable. Changing in efficiency and cost compared to inventories renting movies is more efficient because less time is wasted and it also cuts on economical costs.
